Bio
John LiPuma is the James L. Wilson M.D. Research Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan Medical School and the director of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. He served as the Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics between 2004 and 2014. He is certified by the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Sub-board of the American Board of Pediatrics and is a member of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He has been engaged in biomedical research for more than 30 years with a focus on bacterial infections of the airways in persons with cystic fibrosis. Recent research employs culture-independent microbial community profiling, including the use of next generation DNA sequencing and metabolomic analyses, to understand the microbial ecology of CF airways. His laboratory serves as a national reference laboratory for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and maintains an extensive culture collection that includes approximately 45,000 bacterial strains. He is a recipient of the Richard C. Talamo Distinguished Clinical Achievement Award from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. He was awarded an honorary Ph.D. degree from the University of Gent, Belgium, in 2014. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and has mentored numerous subspecialty fellows, master’s students, and Ph.D. post-doctoral fellows.
