Edward R. Canda, PhD, MSW, MA, is professor emeritus in the School of Social Welfare at the University of Kansas (KU). He was on the faculty of KU from 1989 to 2019 and previously on the social work faculty of the University of Iowa for three years. He has an MA in religious studies from the University of Denver, and MSW and PhD degrees in social work from The Ohio State University. Dr. Canda mainly taught human behavior theory, qualitative research methods, and spiritual and cultural diversity in social work practice. His research and service address connections between cultural diversity, spirituality, and resilience in relation to health, mental health, and disabilities. Professor Canda has more than 200 publications and has conducted about 240 presentations in the United States and in many other countries, especially in East Asia and Central Europe. His most widely cited books are Spiritual Diversity in Social Work Practice (Canda, Furman, and Canda, 2020, 3rd edition, Oxford University Press) and Contemporary Human Behavior Theory (Robbins, Chatterjee, Canda & Leibowitz, 2019, 4th edition, Pearson). In 2013, he received the Council on Social Work Education’s Significant Lifetime Achievement Award. Given his experience as a person living with CF, Dr. Canda volunteers to support the CF Foundation, for which he is a member of the Adult Advisory Council, the ResearchCon Executive Committee, and the Access Committee.
