Edward R. Canda, PhD, (Ed) is professor emeritus in the School of Social Welfare at the University of Kansas (KU). He was on the faculty of KU from 1989 to 2019 and previously on the social work faculty of the University of Iowa for three years. Ed mainly taught human behavior theory, qualitative research methods, and spiritual and cultural diversity in social work practice. His research and service address connections between cultural diversity, spirituality, and resilience in relation to health, mental health, and disabilities. Ed continues to publish and do presentations frequently, nationally and internationally. In 2013, he received the Council on Social Work Education’s Significant Lifetime Achievement Award. Ed was diagnosed with CF at the age of 18. Living with CF helped shape his career interests in how people can respond to adversity and life challenges with resilience and transformational growth. Ed has been active with the CF Foundation as a member of the Adult Advisory Council (2020-2022), the 2021 ResearchCon Executive Planning Committee, and the Access Steering Committee (2020-2024), and as a Grant Reviewer and Community Voice Peer Mentor. In 2023, Ed co-founded the Alliance of Social Workers with CF. Ed currently consults on two research projects related to CF and mental health.
