Until It’s Done: Where We’ve Come From and Where We’re Going with CF Research
Description

It’s no secret that the story of cystic fibrosis is one of the best stories in medicine, and the key chapters are well known: the sweat test, enzymes, discovering the gene, venture philanthropy, highly effective modulator therapy. But there is more to the story and evolution of CF research and treatment. This keynote will highlight some lesser known but vitally important publications that changed the CF landscape, while also examining what life was like for someone with CF when they were published. These publications illustrate a range of types of research, including case reports, observational studies, use of the Patient Registry, randomized controlled clinical trials, and basic science hypotheses. We’ll discuss how research has evolved our understanding of CF from a childhood lung disease to a whole-person disease, and we’ll end with thoughts about how the COVID era may be a positive force for the future of CF research. The keynote will open with a special welcome from CF Foundation President and CEO Michael Boyle, MD.
