Cade Hovater is a 35-year-old adult with cystic fibrosis from Muscle Shoals, Ala. He graduated from Birmingham-Southern College with a BS in biology. In college, he completed two semesters of CFTR research at the University of Alabama cystic fibrosis research center. After college, he worked for a year part-time as an assistant to Dr. Eric Sorscher, helping with email correspondence and editing manuscripts. He has volunteered with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at both the local and national levels. Locally, he has spoken about the unique experience of being a patient and doing lab research on his own disease. Since 2015, he has volunteered with the CF Foundation at the national level through Community Voice and Research Voice. Currently he serves on the Food Security Committee, with past service on the Success with Therapies Research Consortium and the Palliative Care Guidelines Committee. He has a passion for mental health, and symptom and pain management in CF. He is currently a consultant on the InSPIRe:CF trial, which is studying the introduction of palliative care to routine CF care. Additionally, he reviews research protocols for the Therapeutic Development Network and edits public research summaries for the Journal of CF.
