Family is What You Make It

Keynote
Audience: CF Adults, Partners/Spouses

The keynote will set the stage for the first portion of CF FamilyCon for adults with CF and their partners. Hear from one married couple that has navigated the ups and downs of blending families, caregiving through transplant, and other challenges while supporting an intimate relationship. You'll also hear from a single adult with CF about how they define family, how they use the support of friends to create a family, and how they explore the decision to date or not to date.

  • Paths to Parenthood
    Format: Panel Discussion with Q&A
    Audience: CF Adults, Partners/Spouses

Ever wonder how adults with CF decide to become parents? With or without fertility challenges, there are a range of options from natural conception to assisted reproductive therapy, surrogacy, adoption, foster care, and other ways of becoming a parent such as step-parenting. Adults with CF who have been down similar paths will discuss their own considerations in becoming a parent, including health, fertility, and finances.
  • We’re Not Having Kids, Now What?
    Format: Group Discussion
    Audience: CF Adults, Partners/Spouses
Have you decided that having or raising kids is not in your life plan? Or are you in the process of trying to figure out whether or not it is for you? Join us for a discussion about deciding not to have children and what a fulfilling child-free life looks like for you. We'll discuss the paths that lead to this decision, how CF factors into the decision, or coping with the reality of a child-free life if you did not have a choice.
  • When CF Cancels Life
    Format: Group Discussion
    Audience: CF Adults, Partners/Spouses
Sometimes CF means plans get cancelled -- both life plans and Saturday afternoon plans. When you bring a partner into the mix it means their plans are cancelled too. How do you live life when it feels like CF puts it on hold? How have you helped friends and family understand these moments? Come to share your experiences, hear from others, and tackle the challenges together.
  • The Fine Line Between Lover and Caregiver
    Format: Group Discussion
    Partners/Spouses

How do you balance life as both a partner and caregiver? How do you keep from becoming too "parental?" How do you keep the romance alive when CF can be gross? Come chat about how you find a way to balance both roles.

  • Sex and CF
    Format: Group Discussion
Audience: Group for Women with CF, Group for Men with CF

How has your sex life been affected by CF? Let's talk about what issues you have encountered and how you have dealt with them.

  • Parenting with a CF Partner
    Format: Group Discussion
    Audience: CF Adults, Partners/Spouses
Parenting is often a balancing act between two people juggling the business of kids, taking care of your home, and making a living. When one parent has CF, it can really change the "normal" dynamic of a family. How has CF affected parenting and family life for you? Let's discuss the impact of treatments, being on oxygen, having frequent hospital visits or tune-ups, and all the other ways CF can affect our lives as parents, whether you are the person with CF or the person committed to the CF lifestyle with your partner.

2:45 - 3:00 p.m. ET      Break

How do they participate in your CF, if at all? How do you balance treatment time with parenting? What do you do when your kid brings home a cold, virus, or other illness? Let's share the tips and tricks we use in our own lives as we learn from each other and share the single-parent experience as an adult with CF.

  • Menopause
    Format: Group Discussion
    Audience: Women with CF

Are you just starting menopause or in the throes of it all? In this session we will describe and discuss the typical experience of menopause and consider how it is different for women with CF. Bring your stories, and feel free to share any changes you have noticed with aging and how it affects your CF.
  • CF and Body Image
    Format: Group Discussion
    Audience: CF Adults
Ever felt self-conscious about skinny arms or a steroid-induced moon face? Ever been mortified because someone asked if you were pregnant and you weren't? CF is thought of as an "invisible illness," but for some of us, the physical distinctions that come with the disease can be hard to manage. These effects can be tough for adults and adolescents alike. Come have a conversation in a supportive environment with people who understand.
  • LGBTQ CF Community
    Format: Group Discussion
    Audience: CF Adults, Partners/Spouses
Come join other adults with CF who are also a part of the LGBTQ community. It can sometimes be difficult to date with a chronic illness, but we have some good experiences too. We have a unique experience in life that not many others can relate to, so come share your stories of living as a member of two communities -- LGBTQ and CF.

If you answer “yes” to any or all of these questions, then this workshop is for you. Come learn about free-writing as a tool for self-reflection and creativity. There are many school-related issues for our kids with CF, and these issues change as our children grow and progress through school. In this session we will break out into groups based on the school age of our kids and discuss school-related topics. You know what CF stands for and you have a rudimentary understanding of how it affects your friend or family member’s lungs, but perhaps you’re a bit reluctant to admit that you don’t understand much more than that. Does this sound like you? If so, please join us for this relaxed session to learn a bit more about CF, and to have a non-judgmental place to ask those questions you might not want to ask your friend or family member. This session will include two adults with CF and a CF clinician to answer your questions.

This panel will comprise successful CF adults willing to answer our questions about anything from organizing meds and time management, to things that their parents did to help them along their journey. Hear about some of the things that worked well for these families, some things that might not have worked so well, and how we think about parenting CF kids for future success.
  • How to Best be Supportive and Ask Better Questions
    Panel Discussion with Q&A
    Audience: Everyone

Being a part of someone’s support system can be difficult and make us feel vulnerable no matter what. It can be even more challenging when we don't know how to talk with or ask questions to a loved one struggling with illness or any of the surprises that having CF can bring. How can we ask effective questions and know what to listen for? In this panel of two people living with CF and two primary caregivers, we will explore what support has looked like in their lives and what questions and conversations are helpful – and not so helpful. We will talk about challenges they face day-to-day, and the differences in acute care versus supporting quality of life. We hope that you walk away with tools to help you ask good questions and build an effective support system for the families and friends in your circle who are managing life with CF.
  • Navigating Relationships While Caring for a Child with CF
    Group Discussion

As parents, we tend to put aside our relationship with our spouse/partner while managing our daily lives and taking care of our children with CF. We know it is important to nurture our relationship, yet often we feel like there are not enough hours in the day. Fear, stress, resentment, financial strain, sleep deprivation, doctors’ appointments, and medical decisions all contribute to our relationship struggles. Whether you don’t know how to approach the struggle or you’re trying to figure out how to be better together, this may be the session for you. Join to connect with other parents who have similar challenges in their relationship.
